How to get to Lake Ōhau?

Ōhau is a 2.5-hour drive from Queenstown, a 4-hour drive from Christchurch, or a 1-hour drive from Lake Tekapo. Fly to Christchurch or Queenstown, then hire a car and drive here.

 

What to do in Lake Ōhau

Ōhau is for adventuring and relaxing. Go skiing, hiking, fishing, and cycling—then come back to Lake Ōhau Escape to rest by the fire, relax in the spa, and watch the spectacular night sky. Lake Ōhau is an incredible base to explore the natural surroundings:

What to bring

Food & Supplies
There are no shops or cafes here—so bring all your food, drink, and supplies.
Bring your own coffee beans to use in our espresso machine, as well as your shampoo and conditioner.
Note: There is a water-boil advisory notice, so either boil your drinking water here at the house or bring your own bottled water.

Clothing
Bring clothes that are suitable for various temperatures & weather. Even in the middle of summer, there are times when you might wear jeans & a jacket due to the lake breeze and mountain air. It can be hot, cold, and everything in between.

Gear & Entertainment:
Bring your skis/bike/yoga mat/gear, or hire/purchase from Christchurch/Queenstown.
As we have unlimited WIFI but no TV, bring your devices if you want to watch movies or TV.

Nearest facilities
The nearest towns are Twizel (25min drive) or Omarama (30min drive).
Twizel has the best selection of shops, including a supermarket (a decent-sized 4-square), cafes, a couple of restaurants, a pharmacy, hardware/homeware, a liquor store, ice cream, some clothing, and a few other stores.

What is provided?
Linen and towels are provided, and small amounts of basic essential supplies; including toilet paper, soap, dishwashing liquid, dishwasher powder, washing machine detergent, salt&pepper, olive oil, tea, and instant coffee.
