  • Yes you can—Lake Ōhau is widely considered one of the Mackenzie Basin’s most scenic and underrated trout fisheries.

Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, tussock-covered hills, and glacial landscapes, the lake offers a quieter and less pressured alternative to some of the region’s more heavily visited waterways.

The lake supports healthy populations of both brown trout and rainbow trout, typically averaging between 1–2 kilograms, alongside occasional landlocked salmon. The water itself is exceptionally clear, creating excellent sight-fishing opportunities in calm conditions, particularly around shallow weed beds and along sections of the shoreline.

Unlike many seasonal fisheries, Lake Ōhau itself remains open for fishing year-round, making it an appealing destination across all seasons. Winter fishing is particularly striking, with snow-covered peaks surrounding the lake and remarkably crisp atmospheric conditions.

Both shore-based and boat fishing can be productive on Lake Ōhau depending on conditions.

The head of the lake near the Dobson River mouth is particularly popular, where trout cruise the shallows and feed around weed beds and current lines. During calm periods, fish are often visible in the clear water, allowing for stalking and sight-casting opportunities.

Spinning and trolling are among the most common methods used on the lake, while fly-fishing can be highly rewarding during suitable weather conditions. Anglers regularly use: Woolly Buggers, Mrs Simpson patterns, Pheasant Tail nymphs, Black and gold Tobys, Rapalas and Cobras.

The exposed nature of the lake means conditions can change quickly, particularly during northwesterly winds, and boaters should take care during unsettled weather.

  • Several environmental and geographical factors contribute to the quality of fishing throughout the Mackenzie region and this variety allows for multiple fishing styles and conditions across the same trip:

    • Glacial Lakes & Clean Waterways: The lakes and rivers of the Mackenzie Basin are fed by alpine and glacial systems flowing from the Southern Alps, resulting in clear, cold, oxygen-rich water well suited to trout and salmon populations.

    • Diverse Fishing Environments: Within a relatively short distance, anglers can access: Large alpine lakes, Braided rivers, Tributary streams, Hydro canals, Smaller high-country lakes and tarns

    • Year-Round Fishing Opportunities: Many of the region’s lakes remain open year-round, while the hydro canals continue to attract anglers throughout winter due to their consistently large fish populations.

    • Low Population & Open Landscapes: The sparsely populated nature of the Mackenzie Basin creates a quieter and more remote fishing experience than many other destinations, particularly around Lake Ōhau itself.

  • Yes! Less than an hour from Lake Ōhau lies one of New Zealand’s most famous freshwater fisheries: the Mackenzie hydro canal system near Twizel.

Fed by the waters of Lakes Ōhau, Pukaki, and Tekapo, these canals have become internationally known for producing extraordinarily large trout and salmon. Rainbow and brown trout exceeding 10 kilograms are occasionally caught, while Chinook salmon from nearby salmon farms are also regularly landed.

The canals provide a completely different fishing experience to the alpine lakes: Deep, fast-flowing water, Extremely large fish, Year-round accessibility, Shore-based fishing opportunities, Night fishing potential, Incredible sights of human engineering.

Popular fishing techniques used in the canals include: Soft bait fishing, Spin fishing, Egg pattern flies, Shrimp and grub baits, and Slow bottom presentations. During winter, fish often congregate near canal heads and intake structures during spawning periods, creating some of the region’s most sought-after fishing conditions.

  • Fishing is possible throughout much of the year, although conditions and techniques vary seasonally.

    • Summer (December–February): Warmer weather, Excellent lake access, Evening rises and shoreline activity, Ideal for boating and fly-fishing

    • Autumn (March–May): Cooler temperatures, Active trout feeding, Stable weather conditions, Strong canal fishing

    • Winter (June–August): Snow-covered alpine scenery, Excellent canal fishing for large trout and salmon, Clear atmospheric conditions, Quiet and less crowded waterways

    • Spring (September–November): Tributary systems reopen, Increased fish movement, Productive river fishing conditions

  • For anglers exploring the Mackenzie Basin, Lake Ōhau Escape offers a quiet lakeside base within easy reach of the region’s major fishing locations.

After a day on the water, guests can return to uninterrupted lake and mountain views, relax in the outdoor spa, or prepare freshly caught trout or salmon while overlooking the alpine landscape. The property’s position beside Lake Ōhau places guests close to both remote high-country fishing and the internationally recognised hydro canal fisheries near Twizel.

Whether visiting for a dedicated fishing trip or combining fishing with hiking, skiing, cycling, or stargazing throughout the Mackenzie Basin, Lake Ōhau provides access to some of New Zealand’s most remarkable freshwater environments.
